The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, located in the Bay of Bengal, is a splendid tropical island outpost, closer to southeast Asia. From being known as “Kalapani” (Black waters) due to the atrocious history of the British Regime in India, to be known as one of the best tourist destinations of India, Andaman Islands have come a long way. Incredible corals and marine life, crystal clear water and mangrove-lined creeks lure travelers to these picturesque islands, while the sandy beaches form as nesting homes to turtles, animals such as spotted deer, wild boar, gecko, crab-eating macaque and python can be spotted in the 86% area covered by dense forests.These islands are populated by indigenous tribes, but the majority of the population now live in and around Port Blair, the Capital of South Andaman.

Even if you want to visit these islands, now would be a good time.


The only commercial airport to reach Andamans is located at Port Blair, Veer Savarkar Airport, named after the famous freedom fighter Veer Savarkar who was imprisoned in this island at Cellular Jail earlier known as KaalaPaani. Direct flight to Port Blair is available from Chennai, Kolkata and Delhi. The journey usually takes around 2 Hrs 30 Mins.

The Andaman group of Islands is well connected by sea. Regular passenger services are available to Port Blair from Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam.
Chennai – Port Blair , Kolkata – Port Blair takes around 66 Hrs and from Visakhapatnam – Port Blair – takes around 56 Hrs.

The history of Andaman and Nicobar Islands suggests that the island was a covered with a tribal population until 1789. In 1789, the East India Company established a settlement in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, but was soon vacated in 1796.It was in 1857, during the first war of Indian Independence that the island was used as a penal colony, which was known as ‘Kalapani’. The convicts charged against some criminal offense against the East India Company was sent to Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Moreover, during the Second World War, the island was recaptured by the Britishers who continued their administration in the islands till 1947, the year when India got its independence.In fact, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ geography and history is a rich store house that enfolds the topography and rich past of the Island.

Mobile & Telephone Access:Mobile providers include BSNL,Vodafone and Airtel with Reliance functioning currently only in Port Blair with excellent connectivity. As you travel away from the city of Port Blair to outer city limits or other islands, connectivity may become weak.
